What is Acne ?
Acne is the result of the action of hormones on the skin's oil glands (known as sebaceous glands), resulting in plugged pores and outbreaks of skin lesions commonly called pimples or zits.
The sebaceous glands produce an oily substance called sebum that normally empties onto the skin surface through the opening of the follicle, or pore.

A follicle consists of a canal connected to a sebaceous gland, and it also contains a fine hair. See diagram below.

This is a diagram of a normal healthy follicle:

Because these sebaceous glands and follicles are most numerous on the face, upper back, and chest, so acne is most likely to appear in these areas.

Acne results when the hair, sebum, and keratinocytes(cells that line the follicle) produce a plug, which prevents sebum from reaching the surface of the skin through a pore.

This mixture of oil and cells allows bacteria to grow in the plugged follicles, and these bacteria produce chemicals and enzymes which attract white blood cells and cause inflammation.

If the wall of the plugged follicle breaks down, it spills everything into the nearby skin, leading to lesions or pimples.

When the plugged follicle stays beneath the skin, it produces a white bump called a whitehead.
When it reaches the surface of the skin and opens up, it is called a blackhead.

An important factor in the incidence of acne is an increase in hormones called androgens (male sex hormones). These increase in both boys and girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum.
Acne is most common in the 14-24 year age group.

Although it is not a serious health threat, acne is the most common form of skin disease - severe acne can lead to disfiguring and permanent scarring.
